Chapter 6

Colby was awake and on her cellphone when Darcy came rushing into her daughter’s room to ask her to watch Zane until she and Jon got back. Her daughter shrugged, so used to her mother asking for this favor that it barely merited a quick ‘Kay’ of acknowledgment. Darcy almost added to say hi for them to Audrey, certain that was who she was talking to on her phone, but there was no time for it. There would be time to talk about this dating thing later.

They’d had to waste a few minutes getting dressed, but Darcy had just grabbed the first things she came to. She had on two different socks and a pair of khakis and a green blouse that she’d honestly forgotten she even had. None of that mattered. They had to get to Shaniqua. They had to help her.

Now they were in Jon’s car, breaking every speed limit on their way to the city of Oak Hollow. Darcy was pretty sure that his police officer driving skills had already cut half an hour off the drive time, but it wasn’t enough for her. Clutching her cellphone tight in her hand, she prayed for him to go faster.

“Is she still not answering your messages?” Jon asked.

“No, she’s not. Or my phone calls, either. I’m worried, Jon.”

He nodded, and coaxed a little more speed out of the engine as the sun broke above the horizon. It was that time of day when it was just bright enough that the headlights really weren’t doing much, and because of that he wasn’t willing to drive like a maniac. Darcy clenched her jaw and had to admit that she approved of that decision, because they wouldn’t do anyone any good if they crashed before they got to Shaniqua’s hotel.

Still, she found herself pressing her foot against an invisible gas pedal, wanting to be at Shaniqua’s hotel right now.

The nearby city of Oak Hollow was just a couple of minutes away now, and the Northern Lights Hotel would be just a minute or two further. Ten minutes, tops, she figured, and they could be at Shaniqua’s room.

Darcy ground her teeth together, wishing she knew why her friend wasn’t answering her phone, and afraid that she already did know.

“Maybe I should call one of the others.” It wasn’t the first time she had suggested that. Jon had told her to wait the first time she’d brought it up, telling her to keep trying to message Shaniqua instead. She could be out for breakfast or taking a shower. Maybe there had been more alcohol for her last night after they got back to the hotel, and she might just be sleeping it off. There were any number of reasons why she might not see Darcy’s messages right away.

That advice hadn’t sounded right to Darcy before, and now it sounded even less so.

“I’m calling Marcus,” she said, without waiting for Jon to tell her whether it was a good idea or not. Marcus had been the member of their group she felt closest to back in college.
